July 16 2001 - Boonslick Chordbusters Help in Salt Drive for Kutaisi Kids

Many in the city of Columbia are rising to the call for help from our sister city Kutaisi, Georgia (quick geography lesson: Georgia is bordered by Turkey, Russia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan), and the Boonslick Chordbusters are doing their part.  It may not involve the great a cappella harmony for which the chorus is famous, but it is another example of the determined civic-mindedness that the Boonslick Chordbusters strive to routinely display.

The problem is based in the fact that Georgians do not have an adequate source of iodine in their diet. The lack of this basic mineral produces mental retardation and goiters in children. The easiest way for people to get iodine is to use iodized salt. A little salt goes a long way because it takes just a small amount of iodine to keep these problems from occurring.

The group "Columbia Cares For Kutaisi Kids" is raising money and salt to assist the Georgians.

The Kiwanis have an international service project to supply iodized salt to everyone who does not have access to it. Unfortunately, Kutaisi has not yet received their supply, so the salt we are sending is intended to hold them until the Kiwanis effort reaches them. The goal of this program is 80,000 lbs of iodized salt.

The Boonslick Chordbusters are donating 100 dollars to the effort, and they used their appearance on the Paul Pepper Show today to promote the cause. This represents valuable air time that would have otherwise gone to promoting the chorus' fall show.
